Brazilian Gripe

mylds mail hates all the missionaries today so I am going to have to make this short.

Last week I was sick with a cold and I learned a few things: 1. I don't have the vocabulary for symptoms and 2. Brazilians have funny ideas about sickness. For example: I was drinking water and then I was going to drink some hot tea that a member had made for me with honey and lemon... well you aparntly can't have any thing kind of cold and honey and lemon because of something something. I told my companion "whatever" and she was like, "well, just remember it's Brazilian honey and you have a Brazilian gripe (cold), it's different." It was funny but I am great now. I need to get going.

I love you all, I heard that some of you are working on coming to Brazil to see me in more than a year that will rock !!!!!
So i have to go, love you all more than I can say.

First Transfers

Dear Family,
Life is good. Transfers were today and I get to stay in Camacari for at least 6 more weeks. That is great. I love Sister Rezende. She may or may not be staying for one more transfer as an extension. I think that she will, but not for the whole transfer. No one gets to extend more than 14 days. But we will see if that is the case. I bet that next transfer we get put in a threesome since there are a whole whapping 9 sisters in this mission as of today!

Yesterday I gave my first talk in church. It was OK. I know that I did the best I could do. I was asked by the bishop at like 12 that day. I was thinking well, it is not really a problem that he did not give me time to prepare because the real problem is that I don’t really speak Portuguese. It was not too bad.

I started with a commitment for everyone to make a prayer in their heart and by telling everyone that they would learn something by the spirit if they were listening. I thought it was a good idea and true. I talked about the different kinds of missionary work that we have and how the members can be missionaries too. That is not very exciting. I think the more exciting part was that the next day I was blessed with the gift of tongs more than I have ever before. How cool is that !!!

Also, on Sunday I had to sing in public at a fire side that we had. I sang “God Is Love”. It is a pretty simple song. It is hard to sing in Portuguese though. That is OK it was not bad and probably better than the last time I sang in a meeting.

Yesterday was a pretty freaken awesome day if I do say so myself. We taught one girl that we had meet the day before. She had talked with the missionaries before but that was the end and she wanted to learn more about the church. Then a family with two brothers by the names of Neldon and Nelton and all of their siblings names start with “Nel” like Nelson, Nellyn, Nel-something. I think it is basically funny.

Anyway, the family that we taught was really cool and Sister Rezende was testifying about Joseph Smith with one mighty powerful testimony. It was so cool and we organized a family night for another family that we taught last week who have been having family prayer but they did not come to church. That is OK, it is great that they have been praying as a family. Family night tonight will rock I know.

Anyway, life is great. Time is up I think.

PS – I just want to tell you that I have been reading way too many Ensign articles. Yesterday I even read the no hanging out addition. Sometimes I am grateful to be on a mission.

life is good

Sorry for last week's letter. I was not very organized and I didn't know what to type so I didn't write much of anything. I think I was in a bad mood, normally I write down things that I want to say but last week I didn't.

So, there are a few things for this week that I am mentioning first because I keep forgetting to tell you about them: Hear in my mission we are allowed on p-day to listen to other good music, so if any one feels so inclined to send me a Wicked CD or a Jack Johnson CD or Beetles or any other good-clean-fun music, I would not be mad about it at all.

Last week we had lots and lots of fun but we kept running into problems, people didn't want to talk to us or we didn't want to talk to them. One day, everyone that we talked to was drunk and they were so funny, but you can't teach people when they are drunk. It was Thursday, not even a weekend!!!! I mean we expect people to be drink on the weekend but Thursday afternoon?!?! Come on!!!! Sister Rezende blames anything like that on the fact that we are in Baia which is different from the rest of Brazil.

One day we were walking from Verde Horisonte, which is one of the neighborhoods we work in, and there was a dead mouse on the ground. We made a cross made out of sticks and placed it above the mouse. I wrote RIP and taught Sister Rizende that RIP means rest in peace. She decided that RIP was her new favorite phrase in English so she says it all the time and it is how we say good night: Rest In Peace Sister :) I think it's very funny.

fist week of march

Oh man, time flies,... Are you kidding.. it is March!!!

Ok, This week was great we had our first baptism. This kid is a rock-star; he has many friends that are members and his whole family came for church on Sunday for the baptism and stayed all three hours for the conformation. It was great! I think the whole family will be baptized but we will have to be very faithful with the Father. He is really stuck to his mothers religion, even though he dose not regularly attend and understands the authority issue. He is funny and really smart, good thing my companion is amazing and we will be able to teach him--I just know it.

Anyway, things are really good here, this week has been hard. I think I told you, we taught 27 lessons last week, this week we taught 31 and that was with a zone conference--that is a huge blessing! My companion said there were these Elders that taught 60 lessons in two days. I think that at that point, you are going for numbers--not for people. It seems a little over the top. But it is cool to teach that much!

Sorry I don't have much to write this week, my brain feels like mush. Anyway, have a great week and I will write a better email next week. I am praying for all of you and have a great week!
